Basic Life Support with AED

Aim: To provide adult basic life support to meet the level 2 standards of the UK Core Skills Training Framework.

Duration: ½ day course

Ratio: 1 instructor to 6 candidates

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand current legislation and local resuscitation policies, understanding their individual role and responsibilities in responding to persons in emergency situations
  • Be able to recognise cardiorespiratory arrest
  • When to and how to summon immediate emergency help
  • Know how to recognise and respond to patients with clinical deterioration, escalating care in accordance with local policy
  • Update and reflect on the Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines for Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Provide basic airway management
  • Operation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) safely and appropriately
  • Professional and legal responsibilities
  • Applying the local Do Not Attempt Resuscitation Policy within clinical context
  • Review Chain of Survival
  • Shockable rhythms
  • Understand the principles of defibrillation
  • Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines
  • Familiarisation using an AED
  • Practise using airway adjuncts, pocket mask and bag-valve-mask
  • Practice BLS scenarios with an AED and a manikin
  • Continuous assessment for competence
