Immediate Life Support

Aim: For staff to understand their roles and responsibilities in the management of the pre arrest, cardiac arrest and post arrest patient at ILS level.

Duration: 1  day course following the Resuscitation Council, (UK) Guidelines for "In hospital resuscitation" and meets standard of Level 3 resuscitation in the UK Core Skills Training Framework

Ratio: 1 instructor to 6 candidates

  • Universal algorithm
  • Structured approach to assessment (ABCDE)
  • BLS and AED practice
  • Shockable and non-shockable rhythms
  • Reversible causes
  • Use of adrenaline
  • Review “chain of survival”
  • Understand SBAR 
  • Airway management – basic and intermediate
  • Skill stations
  • Team working
  • Peri-arrest and cardiac arrest scenario practice (scenarios will be tailored to the candidate group and working environment)
  • Continuous assessment
