Hospital at Night

A&A Training delivers quality client-specific training on site to NHS Trusts to support the development of their Hospital at Night service.

Our Hospital at Night instructors are senior nurses or doctors who have relevant clinical experience working in hospital night teams.

The Hospital at Night project began at various pilot sites around the country in April 2003 in response to the European Working Time Directive (EWTD) to reduce the hours worked by junior doctors.

Key features of this service, now in force throughout the UK, are:

Medical cover provided in hospitals during the out-of-hours period has been changed

Medical cover requirements areas longer defined by professional demarcation and grade. Cover is now based on the competency of staff in attendance

The HAN model consists of a multidisciplinary night team, which has the competencies to cover a wide range of interventions. It also has the capacity to call in senior and specialist expertise when necessary. This model contrasts with the traditional model of junior doctors working in isolation

The implications for this new way of working are that, in many situations, the junior doctor may well look for guidance from the nurse with enhanced skills.
